The author, Isabel Allende believes that reading is our gateway into new worlds. She feels that without knowing how to read, her life would be meaningless. The author was broughtup in her grandparent's house which was full of books collected by her uncle. Her contact to the world was limited so she turned to books to get a glimpse of the world. When she was nine, she read Shakespears, Russian, French and Latin American Literature. These books allowed her to express herself in politics especially woman's rights. The author believes that her life has influenced her writing as well as herself.
